SCIENCE FICTION REVIEW: Ready Player One - Ernest Cline

Release Date: 18/08/11

SYNOPSIS:

BOOK BLURB

REVIEW:

Ernest Cline’s debut is a Sci-Fi novel those born at a certain time are just going to love. If you’re young enough to remember the revolution in Computer Games in the 80’s will love it, those with a penchant for John Hughes or even John Badham are going to be impressed and perhaps best of all, those with enough geekery to remember the Saturday Morning Cartoons (alongside table top D&D) are going have a blast in this no geek barred hold of this nostalgic decade.

Add to this a series of puzzles within puzzles, a decent lead character and it truly feels that the “geek shall inherit the earth” (or in this case the Oasis) with a truly villainous bad guy, a huge enemy corporation make this tale of the little guy against “the man” tale. All in a wonderful story for fans and with an almost crescendo of a Tronesque battle and this is a story that will impress as well as please with my only real gripe being the lack of mention of the classic home computer the Spectrum 48K. (Can’t you guess which one I had?) A great piece of fun and it’s going to be interesting to see where Ernest will go next with nay a sniff of elderberries.
